As a result of a special meeting of the Carrboro Board of Aldermen called by Aldermen Bethany Cheney and Damon Seils on July 3, town code was amended by a unanimous vote (4-0) to allow establishments in Carrboro to begin serving alcohol at 10 a.m. on Sunday mornings.
Carrboro is the first municpality to pass such an ordinance following Governor Roy Cooper signing Senate Bill 155, commonly called the “Brunch Bill,” into law on June 30th.
Previously North Carolina law prohibited alcohol sales before noon on Sundays. The new law authorizes cities and counties to allow alcohol sales at restaurants and stores beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Sundays.
Carrboro’s new “Brunch” ordinance, effective July 3, 2017, allows for the sale of malt beverages, unfortified wine, fortified wine and mixed beverages within the Town on Sundays beginning at 10 a.m. at any premises having a valid ABC permit issued under G.S. 18B-1001.
Generally, an ABC permit is required for restaurants, hotels, retail businesses, food businesses (including grocery stores, convenience stores or drug stores where food is regularly sold), eating establishments (including lunch stands, grills, fast-food businesses where food is sold to be eaten on the premises), and private clubs (establishments organized and operated solely for a social, recreation, or fraternal purpose that is not open to the general public, but is only open to the members of the organization and their bona fide guests).
