Pride Flags Town Hall

LGBTQ Pride Month in Carrboro

CARRBORO, NC -- June 2021 is LGBTQ Pride Month in the Town of Carrboro, as proclaimed by Mayor Lydia Lavelle.

LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) Pride Month is celebrated nationally each year in the month of June. This month was chosen to commemorate the riots that took place at the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan on the morning of June 28, 1969, often viewed as the birth of the modern LGBTQ rights movement.

“Carrboro is committed to standing with and supporting the LGBTQ community, and to working to ensure that all of its residents, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity or expression, are treated with respect and dignity,” Mayor Lavelle said.

  • Carrboro has a proud history of advancing the rights of its LGBTQ residents, including
  • being the first municipality in the state to create a domestic partner registry on October 11, 1994
  • the first to extend eligibility for employment benefits to same-sex partners of Town employees
  • the first to elect a gay mayor and a lesbian mayor

in January 2021, Carrboro was among the first local governments in the state (along with Hillsborough, Orange County, and Chapel Hill) to pass a local nondiscrimination law extending protections in public accommodation and employment for persons based on their sexual orientation, and gender identity or expression

Small Town PRIDE

LGBTQ Pride Month in Carrboro

Feel Small Town Pride this June! The towns of Carrboro and Chapel Hill are collaborating to show LGBTQ+ Pride, and to affirm community values ensuring that all residents, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, are treated with respect and dignity.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ+) Pride Month is celebrated nationally and locally each year in the month of June.   The origins of Pride stem from the Stonewall Riots that occurred in June of 1969, when attendees of the Stonewall Inn in NYC clashed with anti-LGBTQ police.  Marches and protests popped up in some major US cities in June of the following year to commemorate the event, and the tradition has continued.  The purpose of celebrating Pride is to promote the equality of the LGBTQ+ communities, as well as increase visibility, challenge anti-LGBTQ legislation, and bring awareness to other LGBTQ issues. Progress for true equality requires the support of everyone, including straight allies who know that support for LGBTQ+ people strengthens the entire community.

Through a mix of in-person and virtual events, Small Town Pride will promote equality and celebrate diversity and acceptance in the towns of Carrboro and Chapel Hill. It will involve the entire community, with local businesses, artists, volunteers and community partners. Everyone is welcome!

Wear Orange IG

Friday is Gun Violence Awareness Day in Carrboro

CARRBORO, N.C. – The first Friday in June (June 4) is National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Carrboro, as proclaimed by Mayor Lydia Lavelle.

“I encourage all citizens to support their local communities’ efforts to prevent the tragic effects of gun violence and to honor and value human lives,” Mayor Lavelle said.

Anyone can join this campaign by pledging to wear orange on June 4 to help raise awareness about gun violence; and by wearing orange on that day Americans will raise awareness about gun violence and honor the lives of gun violence victims and survivors.

Every day, more than 100 Americans are killed by gun violence, alongside more than 230 who are shot and wounded, and on average there are more than 13,000 gun homicides every year.

Trails Day in Carrboro

Saturday, June 5, is “Trails Day” in Carrboro, proclaimed by Mayor Lydia Lavelle.

Residents are invited to enjoy the hiking opportunities that can be found in our region and to celebrate the outdoors.

“We celebrate Trails Day and the aspirations it represents: a restorative bond with nature, a recognition that health, both physical and mental, is enhanced by outdoor activities, preservation of our natural environment, and an optimism that can be gained by simply putting one foot in front of the other as we hike a trail,” Mayor Lavelle said.

Immigrant Heritage Month in Carrboro

Mayor Lydia Lavelle has proclaimed June 2021 as "Immigrant Heritage Month” in Carrboro.

“I encourage all residents to respect and honor the many contributions that immigrants have made in our community and country,” Mayor Lavelle said.

The Town of Carrboro is very appreciative of local non-profits and other groups that work with our immigrant community, including El Centro Hispano and the Refugee Support Center.
