[ARCHIVED] Virtual Carrboro Day Event Information

2021CarrboroDayLogo

The annual Carrboro Day Event is scheduled for Sunday, May 2nd, 2021.  This year’s event will be presented in a virtual format with activities presented via YouTube and Zoom.  Content will also be shared via the Carrboro Recreation, Parks, & Cultural Resources Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/carrbororec

Carrboro Day is an annual event that is traditionally held at Town Commons on the first Sunday in May.  This event is about meeting your neighbors, learning about aspects of the Town’s history, connecting with the Town and learning about Town services, and taking a day to celebrate Carrboro!

MUSIC with SALUDOS COMPAY
1:00pm-2:00pm
Presented Virtually via YouTube

Tune in for a performance from local favorite, Saludos Compay.  The performance will be presented via the Town of Carrboro's YouTube account at https://www.youtube.com/CarrboroNC.  You can check out Saludos Compay at https://saludoscompay.com/

Also, look out for a preview of the upcoming Freight Train Blues Concert Series!

A POETRY READING IN THE ROUND
2:00pm-3:00pm
Virtually via Zoom - Link: https://bit.ly/3mGYJOi

The Carrboro Poets Council is bringing back a treasured tradition with a new necessary twist: Poetry in the Virtual Round.  While we won’t be able to sit in a circle at Town Hall, or read poems before the bands play, we will be able to read and celebrate poems on Zoom.  Here is how it will work:

Come celebrate poetry in an easy-going atmosphere - no podiums, no experience necessary! This is an open reading - all are welcome. Come to read your own work, come to share a poem you love by someone else, come to listen only. Leave (quietly, respectfully) whenever you wish.  Readers will read a single SHORT poem (30 lines or less) at a time before we give our attention to the next in the circle. We will rinse and repeat as time allows.

The “Reading in the Round” is hosted by the Carrboro Poets Council: Fred Joiner (Current Carrboro Poet Laureate), Gary Phillips, Gideon Young, Abigail Browning, Maura High, Jay Bryan, Paul Jones, and Susan Spalt.

To join the Zoom program at 2:00pm on May 2nd, please visit https://bit.ly/3mGYJOi

STORYTIME WITH MR. KEITH
3:00pm-3:30pm

We will be sharing a special presentation of 'Storytime with Mr. Keith' via YouTube.  This program is made possible through our partnership with the Orange County Public Library.

HISTORICAL PRESENTATION - RICHARD ELLINGTON, LOCAL HISTORIAN
“Ringing the School Bell – Schools of the Carrboro Area from Jim Crow to Integration”
3:30pm - 4:30pm
Virtually via Zoom - Link: https://bit.ly/3xc1EDt

The greater Carrboro community had public schools even before our community had a name. Orange County began offering tax-paid public schools to its residents in the late 1800s. We will talk about the county’s segregated public education system that began in the “Jim Crow” era and continued until the 1960s.

There were more schools around our county than most people are aware of, but the quality of those schools varied greatly. We will talk about some of the disparities in the original system that persisted until the present.

This presentation will include a number of old maps showing locations of long-gone buildings. There will also be many old and more recent photos to illustrate the history and changes that occurred in many of the public schools in Orange County.

There will be a Q&A time in the middle and at the end of the presentation.

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN WALKING TOUR
On Carrboro Day, plan a walk or run around Downtown Carrboro and check out the sites on the Historic Downtown Walking Tour.  Learn more about the history of the area while getting in some exercise and enjoying the Spring weather!

To see a map and a brief description of each site, please visit https://www.townofcarrboro.org/2491/Walking-Tour

VIRTUAL ART EXHIBITION - RENZO ORTEGA
We will be featuring a virtual art exhibit with local Carrboro artist and resident Renzo Ortega

Visit www.carrboroday.com for updates and content links.

Tune in and show us how you celebrate our community by using #CarrboroDay2021 on social media

We hope to see everyone back in person for the event in 2022!
