Project Installation

Carrboro's first protected bike lane was installed by the Town’s Public Works Department in August of 2021. It begins just south of the N.C. 54 eastbound ramps and extends north to the point near Barnes Street, where the street narrows and the buffered bike lane ends. The pilot project is expected to be in place for through August 2022, and during this period, Town staff will be collecting data and will assess maintenance procedures during the winter months.

A map of the installation areas can be viewed here.

Project Background

In response to community interests, a pilot project for a protected bike lane on Jones Ferry Road has been developed. The goal of the pilot is to help determine the effectiveness of the proposed treatment as well as develop processes for maintenance and upkeep of a protected bike lane, in particular for snow removal. This project was developed and submitted through an encroachment agreement process with NCDOT, which was approved for installation in May 2021. The pilot project is expected to be in place for approximately one year (August 2021 through August 2022), and Town staff will be collecting supporting data (bike-ped counts and motor vehicle volume/speed) at regular intervals during the pilot.
